8th Grade Newsletter
Week of April 28-May 2
Reading – Students will begin their final unit on literary terms this week. Students will continue to discuss the terms and read selections that show the term in use. They will also be answering comprehension questions for each of these selections.
English – Students will be working on speeches for graduation throughout this week. These speeches may be given at the graduation mass, brunch, or ceremony. We will visit about expectations for each of these venues. All students are expected to write a speech. Next week a panel of teachers will listen to the speeches and select students for each area. One speech will be given at Mass, two will be given at the brunch, and two will be given at the graduation ceremony.
Math – We will be continuing to work through Chapter 8 this week. These concepts are becoming increasingly harder as we go, so we will spend the time we need to understand on each lesson. The goal in the 8th graders last 12 days is to get through Chapter 8 and talk about quadratics before they take their finals.
Science – We will be finishing our reactions from Chapter 2 and move ourselves into Chapter 3 which talks about acids, bases, and solutions. We will experiment as much as possible in this chapter figuring out what is going on with all of these fun concepts.
Social Studies -This week the students will finish Chapter 25, Depression and FDR. They will then begin World War II. They will cover the factors that lead up to the war, how the war began, what life was like on the home front, what the war was like in Europe and Asia, and how the war was in the Pacific.
8th Religion-We are working out of our Morality text. We are covering the material in Chapter 8 this week, Respecting Life. The 8th graders will be asked to understand the teaching of the Catholic Church regarding life. Each will research one of the ways our society devalues human life. They will be asked to provide background information, the teaching of the church, and scripture references that support our beliefs. They will share their findings with the class on Thursday this week, and will also move into next week a bit. “I have called you by name, and you are mine.” –Isaiah 43:1
