Early Dismissal
Remember that this week is an early dismissal week.
Invention’s Fair
The sixth graders will be sharing their inventions with the school on January 13 from 1:30-3:00. We invite you to join us during that time as well to celebrate all the hard work and energy that went into these fine creations.
FSPI
We will finalize our problem/solution and turn it in for judging this week.
Report Cards
Report cards will be sent home with your child this week on Thursday. Please send a note back to the homeroom teacher indicating you have seen the card. It is not necessary to send back the report card.
COMING THIS WEEK:
Reading
Reading Periods 1 and 2:
This week the students will be turning in their “Ella Enchanted” essays on Monday because of our early start to Christmas break. We will be taking the Unit 2 pretest early this week and will be starting on Unit 2 right away. Similar to the last unit, those who score an ‘A’ on the pre-test will move onto the Enrichment lessons for this unit. Just a reminder, the 6th graders are to have a ‘free read’ book with them everyday at school. We only go to the library on Fridays, so they may need to be finding books elsewhere if they have gone through most of the books in the classroom as well. The vocabulary test that was supposed to be on Friday December 19th will be on Monday. We will not have additional words this week. We have lots of end of the semester things that need to be done this week due to our snow day.
Math
Mad Minute Update
Those students still working to master the addition mad minutes will be expected to practice these at home daily. On Monday, in class, we will discuss some strategies for improving scores. Students should use these strategies at home to help increase their speed.
Period 1 Math
Period One will begin working on Chapter 4 this week. The focus this week will be on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. On Friday, we will begin working with multiplying fractions.
Period 2 Math
On Monday, period two math will be used to finish up Invention presentations. The reminder of the week will focus on chapter 5. We will begin with ratios, work on unit price and finish the week working through problem solving.
Religion
We will begin the semester reviewing our school and classroom rules. We will also learn a new Student’s Prayer. This prayer will be used by both 6th grade classes to begin each new class period (after a switch). It will be the first recite of the semester on Friday, January 6. This week we will begin working through Unit 3 which covers Chapters 8-11. We will not have individual chapter tests, rather one unit test. Watch the newsletter for the date of this test as we progress through the chapters.
Science
We didn’t finish the presentations prior to Christmas break. We will finalize them on Monday. Grade sheets (rubrics) will be handed back to students on Monday and Tuesday. We will spend some time this week preparing for the Invention’s Fair (January 13th from 1:30-3:00). Students will look at their presentations and determine the most succinct way to share information with our school and our guests so that parents and students can visit all of the exhibits at the Invention’s Fair in the time given.
English
We will be working on our persuasive presentations this week in class. We will be working on how to use facts to support our arguments. We will also be spending a bit of time on how to give credit to the sources we use.
Social Studies
The students have all of their content for chapter 6 finished. We will reviewing this material the first few days back and will have our chapter 6 test on Friday.
