Sixth Grade News

Week of March 8, 2010

Safety Patrol for the Week: Dakota, Randall, Taylor, Skylar, Meredith, and Lizzy

COMING THIS WEEK:

Reading
Period 2 Reading
We are currently working in Unit 4 of our basal book. We will be focusing this first week on non-fictional pieces. Both pieces are informative historical literature. The skill work that we will be working on includes reading floor plans and graphs.

Period 4 Reading
We are now reading “White Fang.” We are looking at the different parts of the story. We will start by focusing on setting and build up of plot.

Period 5 Reading
We are still working on our novel “Ella Enchanted.” We are now focusing on the vocabulary in the story. There are many terms used in the novel that are a bit antiquated and will need some attention from us in this coming week.

English/Writing
We are still working on our Young Authors projects. The students are doing a great job and have been working very hard. We will continue to work on the revision process of our writing throughout this next week. We will work on varying our sentence types, using grade appropriate vocabulary and checking the organization of our work.

Social Studies
We finished the week with reading about the Prairie Provinces, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Next week we will continue learning about their cultural traditions as well as continue on to the province of British Columbia. Students will learn both about British Columbia’s culture as well as their economy.

Math
Period 1 Math
The chapter four test was a bit rocky for much of the class. We will be spending some time reviewing the concepts this week. There are four basic areas: adding and subtracting of fractions and mixed numbers, multiplying and dividing with fractions and mixed numbers, algebra with fractions, and conversions. We will spend time on each of them and try the test again on Thursday. I will encourage everyone to retake the test. The higher of the two scores will be the final grade for the chapter.

Period 3 Math
We will continue our work in chapter 6 this week. Our skill focus will be finding the percent of a number and solving proportions.

Period 6 Math
We have begun our work in chapter 7, geometry. We will finish up lesson 7-2 on Monday by measuring angles. We will work on bisectors, triangles, and quadrilaterals as the week progresses. This is a fun chapter!

Science
This week students will start studying amphibians. They will learn how they are grouped, about their metamorphosis, and more. After amphibians students will be tackling reptiles where they will learn about their characteristics and how they are grouped. The test for this chapter is scheduled for March 16, 2010. Following this test the students will begin working on “Tool Time” which is an assessment required from the Archdioceses of Omaha.

Religion/DWP
Our chapter 19 group will present on Monday, and the quiz over this section will be on Wednesday. We will use the rest of the time to edit our Walking Stations of the Cross and to practice presenting them. We will also finish our discussion regarding the strengths and areas of improvement the 6th graders identified regarding their class as a whole. We will discuss building our strengths and setting goals to help our grade become even stronger leaders.

Future Problem Solving
This coming week students will continue working on their grid as well as starting to write an action plan for the future problem.

Podcasting
We did not have our exploratory classes last week, so we will continue as planned:
We had a slight glitch with the headphones last week, and were not able to work on recording our podcasts. I will work on ironing that out so that we can record once again this week.

Study Skills
We are still working on a project that will last for the remainder of our time together. It is the ‘LIFE’ project. The students will be put into school families. They will be given jobs, salaries, and life situations. They will then have to find a place to live, buy groceries, and pay bills on this budget. Our goal is to show the 6th graders some of the life processes they will be dealing with in the future. It will be done at a 6th grade level, so some things will be simplified. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask your child or myself.
