Pioneer Day - April 23, 2010

The St. Patrick’s fourth graders experienced the 4th annual Pioneer Day at the Benes’ homestead on April, 23rd. The children came in costume and packed lunches in tin pails with foods appropriate for the year 1892. Hosts, Kerry Benes and Kristie Schroll planned an entire day of pioneer experiences for the children. With the help of many parent volunteers, the students learned how to milk a cow, can foods, prepare the garden for planting, pack a wagon, cook over the fire, make butter, iron, diaper a baby, stuff a mattress ticking with hay, gather eggs from the chicken coop and much more!   They spent half of their day in a one room school where they had a chance to write on slates, recite their daily verses, do arithmetic problems and practice reading from McGuffey readers.   It was a wonderfully, memorable day for all involved.
