Preview of the Week
Math (Periods 1 & 2)
- Continue Chapter One over Place Value through One hundred thousand, problem solving strategies, and getting into the millions – We will have a test over Chapter 1 on Wednesday. Your child will come home on Tuesday with a study guide. This is homework but also serves as a study guide to help them prepare for the test.
- Towards the end of the week we will begin learning about decimals along with place value. This will better prepare the kids for adding and subtracting money amounts.
Please use the website below for reinforcement over the skills we have been learning at school.
Please continue to dedicate 10 minutes each day to the rapid recall of multiplication facts. Students can practice with flash cards, websites
www.mathfactcafe.com or by doing practice timed tests. We appreciate your help with this and know that our students will improve dramatically because of this extra effort!
Reading
We will be taking a reading comprehension test on Monday. This evaluation gives us good information on your child’s readability and also what skills we need to reinforce during the year. We will read our first story in the book called “Akiak” by Robert J. Blake this week also. It is a story about the Iditarod race. We will focus on the skills of summarizing, cause and effect, and making predictions.
Grammar
We will be discussing different kinds of sentences this week.
Writing
We will be working on the trait of “ideas and content” this week. Students will have a chance to practice “showing” in their writing instead of just “telling.” Ask your child to explain the difference to you!
Vocabulary
- The vocab words will come from the story “Akiak” from our Reading books this week.
- You can check out the Houghton Mifflin website for activities to help your child practice their vocabulary words. www.eduplace.com/kids/hmr/.
